Group Health Center for Health Studies

Group Health is the nation's oldest and largest consumer-governed, integrated health care system, providing health care to ~550,000 people, or 10% of Washington State's population. Group Health provides health care through its own facilities, including 25 primary care or family medical centers; 6 specialty medical centers; 4 behavioral health clinics; 6 vision centers; 5 speech, language and learning centers; and 1 hospital.

Since 1983, Group Health's Center for Health Studies (CHS) has been developing and testing innovative approaches to prevent and effectively treat health problems, organize health care delivery to improve the health of entire populations, and translate scientific knowledge into effective and efficient clinical practice. CHS has 69 researchers and conducts a wide variety of federally-funded translational research projects.

Group Health Center for Health Studies is one of 15 members of the HMO Research Network , the largest non-federal consortium of health system-based research centers in the U.S. The Network offers a Collaboration Toolkit for investigators and research teams - with tips and practical advice tools plus over 40 tools and resources to plan and carry out multi-site research.

Group Health Center for Health Studies is working to build partnerships between CHS researchers and ITHS members and will help support the creation of new networks in the WWAMI and American Indian and Alaska Native communities and primary care clinical and teaching practices in the WWAMI states. We aim to:

  • Create new and productive research collaborations between Group Health and University of Washington faculty and ITHS members.
  • Educate University of Washington faculty and ITHS members about CHS and what we can offer.
  • Train University of Washington and ITHS researchers on issues related to conducting research within Group Health, and translating research into clinical practice within our delivery system.
  • Connect University of Washington and ITHS researchers with Group Health and CHS collaborative resources.
  • Tailor CHS tools and know-how on multi-site research collaborations and networks to the WWAMI region and American Indian and Alaska Native practice/community based research networks.
  • Assist in creating a system for standardizing health data used for research across different sites within the WWAMI region and American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

These activities will be guided by Dr. Eric Larson:

  • Executive Director, Group Health Center for Health Studies
  • Elected member, National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM)
  • Chair, Asset Stewardship Committee, HMO Research Network (2006-2008)
  • President-elect, Board of Governors, HMO Research Network (2009-2010 term)
