Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Clinical Research Center
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer
Research Center (FHCRC) is a world leader in bone marrow and stem cell transplantation
for the cure of hematologic malignancies.
The unique nature of this institution has determined the need for the ITHS collaboration.
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer
Research Center provides a unique environment for basic and applied science in each
of its four scientific divisions:
1. Basic Sciences Division, focused on basic research in cellular and molecular
biology
2. Clinical Research Division, renowned for its bone marrow transplant program as
well as
studies on tumor, viral immunology, and infectious diseases
3. Public Health Sciences Division, with primary areas of research in biostatistics,
cancer
biology, cancer prevention research and epidemiology
4. Human Biology Division
The FHCRC has a faculty of over 200
scientists working in the four scientific disciplines.
FHCRC researchers receive more peer-reviewed research grants and
contracts from the National Institutes of Health than any other independent U.S.
research center.
In 1998, the FHCRC, UW, and CHRMC collaborated
to create the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, maximizing patient care and research opportunities. FHCRC, UW, and CHRMC
agreed to combine their expertise and resources in the development of SCCA, which
is focused on cancer care.
The goal is to provide an optimal clinical environment for providing cancer care,
to speed the flow of scientific information from researchers to clinicians and patients,
and to accelerate the development of new knowledge and treatment for various cancers.
The three-year implementation process
for the SCCA culminated with the opening of a state-of-the-art outpatient clinic
in January 2001.
