Bioethics
The Bioethics Core Services and activities addresses ethical concerns related to clinical and translational research. The Bioethics Core faculty have expertise in identifying and negotiating ethical issues encountered in the conduct of translational health research. The Bioethics faculty will:
- Advise investigators, trainees, staff, community members, and IRB members about human subjects and related ethical concerns via the Research Bioethics Consult service
- Offer educational programs within the ITHS, including ITHS partner communities, about ethical issues in clinical and translational research
- Collaborate with investigators, community members, ITHS cores, and other CTSAs nationally to identify and address bioethical issues through research or policy development
- Mentor ITHS scholars who are interested in developing ethics expertise in relation to translational health research
Research Bioethics Consult Service:
Our research bioethics consult service provides advice to ITHS members, research participants, families and communities, and IRBs who have questions that could benefit from in-depth conversation and analysis about ethical issues related to the development, implementation, or analysis of clinical research studies.
Consultations may simply involve a phone conversation, while other consultations might involve a face to face meeting and written report back to you.
The consultations are confidential and independent of IRB view. Consultant recommendations are advisory and are supplemental to the IRBs' responsibility for research oversight.
Consults can be requested by contacting the RSB core office at (206) 598-6477 or
rsbcore@u.washington.edu. A consultant will be notified and will call you back shortly. For urgent issues related to the care of a particular research participant you can call the Children's paging operator at 206-987-2000 and ask for the Research Bioethicist on call.
Educational Programming
We provide seminars or noon conference sessions on a range of topics in applied research ethics, including issues related to human subjects research, research collaboration, community-based research, and emerging ethical issues. The Bioethics Team faculty are available to work with your group on a seminar or workshop on issues of interest to you. Please contact Kelly Fryer-Edwards
if you are interested in arranging a session for your group.
Research Collaboration
A primary activity of the Bioethics Faculty is conducting original research in research ethics, including normative, empirical, and policy analysis. We collaborate with ITHS members and other CTSAs nationally on these projects, and aim for project outcomes that are designed to advance
the responsible conduct of translational health research
Mentorship in Research Ethics
RSB Bioethics faculty are available for ITHS scholars with an interest in exploring relevant issues in research ethics. A fellow, faculty, or trainee project may have an ethics component or have an ethics focus. If you have ideas or an interest in talking through a
project, please contact Tom Gallagher for an initial discussion.
