Tech Resource Seminar: eScience Institute--Partners in data-intensive research
Location:
UW South Lake Union, Smith Auditorium with a Live Simulcast Online(see below)
Date and time:
Wed, 07/22/2009 - 9:00am - 10:00am Speaker(s):
- Erik Lundberg, e-Science Insititute
Description:
We are in the midst of a generational shift towards data-intensive research. Across all disciplines, advances in data acquisition technology -- next-generation instruments, sensors, and simulations -- are roughly doubling the total amount of data collected every 12 months. This "data deluge" requires new solutions in data management, visualization, and data mining, as well as new approaches to provisioning the underlying computational infrastructure.
The eScience Institute was created to provide expertise, software tools and infrastructure solutions for data-intensive science. These goals are reinforced by the findings of the recently-completed study of researchers' information technology needs, titled "Conversations with UW's Research Leaders".
Join members of the eScience Institute who will discuss the findings and recommendations of the Conversations report, share examples of techniques and approaches for dealing with massive data sets in a variety of science settings, and describe how we can help you address the technical challenges in your data-intensive research.
