The Allen Institute for Brain Science offers free, public resources integrating extensive gene expression databases and neuroanatomy. All data and associated search and visualization tools are accessible online via www.brain-map.org.

This seminar will demonstrate the resources available for exploring gene expression in the mouse and human nervous systems. Basic data access, navigation and usability will be covered, as well as more sophisticated search and visualization features. The full spectrum of Allen Institute resources will be addressed, including those for adult mouse brain, developing mouse brain, mouse spinal cord, human cortex, transgenic mice and more.

Before the Workshop:
For a hands-on experience, attendees are encouraged to bring a computer connected to the Internet so that they can follow along. One of the following browsers should be installed in advance:

Microsoft Windows XP sp2, Vista

  • Internet Explorer 7.0 or Firefox 3.0
  • Flash 10

Apple Macintosh OS X 10.3.6, 10.4
 

  • Safari 3.1.2 or Firefox 3.0
  • Flash 10

In addition, the associated 3D viewing program, Brain Explorer®, will be used and can be downloaded for free.
