ITHS Boot Camp - Scalable Bioinformatics in the Cloud
Date and time:
Fri, 09/25/2009 - 3:00pm - 3:50pm
Location:
UW Health Sciences, Room T733
Science is becoming data-intensive. New discoveries are increasingly made through semi-automatic analysis of massive datasets. Cloud computing is about centralizing the resources required to manage and process these large datasets, and thereby lower costs. I will introduce and motivate the trend towards cloud computing for science and present selected case studies applying this paradigm to bioinformatics problems. I will also introduce the eScience Institute, a state-funded group within the University of Washington created to provide the "intellectual infrastructure" needed for data-intensive science -- expertise in data management, scalable (and cloud) computing, machine learning, and visualization.

Senior Scientist, eScience Institute Affiliate Assistant Professor, CSE
