{"id":3645,"date":"2019-01-09T11:25:14","date_gmt":"2019-01-09T19:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iths.org\/participate\/?p=3645"},"modified":"2021-03-22T09:15:14","modified_gmt":"2021-03-22T16:15:14","slug":"mapping-study-language-learning-in-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iths.org\/participate\/mapping-study-language-learning-in-children\/","title":{"rendered":"PLOT Study &#8211; Profiling Language Learning Over Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"box summary\"><\/div>\n<p>Our team is the NeuDLL (Neurodevelopmental Disorders Language &amp; Learning) Lab in the UW Speech &amp; Hearing Department.<\/p>\n<p>We are seeking families to participate in research related to spoken language in children with and without developmental disorders. Our current study focuses on how children learn words in stories and the skills that support learning. This work is funded by NIH BIDCD R21 DC017226.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of our research is to better understand what parts of language are easier or harder for different children to learn and why that may be the case. We\u2019re especially interested in how children learn words\/language. Our ultimate goal is to understand more about developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder and fragile X syndrome and\/or fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, about how language is learned, or ways that better treatments could eventually be designed.<\/p>\n<p>Parents and children who choose to participate will come to our lab for a variety of short behavior assessments. For some tasks, a researcher will interact with the child using toys, books, or pictures to determine how that child learns, understands, uses language, or interacts with other people. Other tasks will involve the child listening to different words or sounds and watching pictures on a TV screen while we track where they are looking. Parents will also be asked to play with their child and complete some questionnaires regarding their child\u2019s language and behavior.
