This study is evaluating the “Pain Identification and Communication Toolkit (PICT)”, a novel intervention to help caregivers recognize and communicate about pain in family members with dementia. Eligible participants will be randomized to either the control or the intervention group. The control group participants will receive informational pamphlet and a link to an Alzheimer’s Association website. The intervention group participants will receive our PICT workbook and participate in four 30-60-minute telephone sessions with a social worker. Participants in both groups will complete brief surveys at the beginning and end of the study and will receive compensation up to $80.
Your participation can provide valuable information needed to further develop this tool to help family caregivers of individuals with dementia. This study is being conducted by Dr. Catherine Riffin and is funded by the National Institute on Health (NIH). This study is approved by the Weill Cornell Medicine Institutional Review Board, protocol #1811019718.
If you are interested in participating in this study, please contact Kiana Cruz, our research assistant, at kic4001@med.cornell.edu.

Participant Eligibility

Family caregiver
Age 21 or older
English speaking
Cognitively intact
Provides at least 8 hours of care per week to a person with dementia and pain
Has provided care for at least 6 months

Contact

Kiana Cruz
(203) 429-4319

Additional Study Details

Full Study Title
Developing A Pain Identification And Communication Toolkit (PICT) For Family Caregivers Of Persons With Dementia

Study ID: 1811019718

ClinicalTrials.gov Link: NCT03853291

Start Date: 12/20/2019

End Date: 12/08/2021

Investigator(s)
Catherine Riffin
Cary Reid
Karl Pillemer

Accepts Healthy Volunteers?
Yes

Study Site(s)

Weill Cornell Medicine

1300 York Ave
New York, New York 10065

We are seeking caregivers who provide care for family members with dementia and pain to participate in a research study at Weill Cornell Medicine.
