The Applied Hearing Science Lab in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington is conducting a research project on hearing wellness among older adults. The goal of the project is to understand the factors underlying individual differences in speech understanding in challenging acoustic environments and to develop technological solutions to facilitate speech communication under such conditions.<\/p>\n

Participating in our research involves comprehensive hearing and cognitive assessments, tasks in which participants repeat presented words with or without wearing a wearable device (e.g., hearing aid), and tasks in which participants make judgements on the perceived quality of presented speech sounds. Participation may require multiple (2-3) visits to the lab, with about 2 hours for each visit.<\/p>\n

Although there are no direct benefits, the results of the study may ultimately aid those who have hearing loss and difficulty understanding speech in noise. All participants will receive compensation of $15\/hr plus complimentary on-site parking. Our lab is conveniently located on the UW Seattle campus, a 2-minute walk from the U-district link station.<\/p>\n
