I brought the term population health to UW in 1998 when Clyde Hertzman from UBC came to deliver a public health grand rounds. I began teaching courses in population health in 2001, and first published on the subject in 1999. My courses are some of the highest rated in the school of public health. They require students to take the ideas from the classroom and organize a community event to present them there. In the undergrad course they have to be more creative. One example is at http://populationhealth.strikingly.com/#home

In addition to teaching at UW I give 50-60 outside lectures a year. I also teach courses in this material to retirees. I am the first person at UW to situate the poor US health status compared to other rich nations.

My work has focused on presenting population health concepts to various audiences from grades 5 on to post-doctoral levels. I have given a TedX talk on this material as well as eight broadcasts on Alternative Radio. The latest this year is at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8fnzZH_qSPyek1ENVNPLWlLNFE/view?usp=sharing
and most of the others are on the Population Health Forum’s website listed above.

I focus on early life, the first thousand days. as requiring action for US health to improve. I was asked to join the board of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility to lead their strategic plan to improve US health.
