I brought the term population health to UW in 1998 when Clyde Hertzman from UBC came to deliver a public health grand rounds. I began teaching courses in population health in 2001, and first published on the subject in 1999. My courses are some of the highest rated in the school of public health. They require students to take the ideas from the classroom and organize a community event to present them there. In the undergrad course they have to be more creative. In addition to teaching at UW I give 50-60 outside lectures a year. I also teach courses in this material to retirees. I am the first person at UW to situate the poor US health status compared to other rich nations.

My work has focused on presenting population health concepts to various audiences from grades 5 on to post-doctoral levels. I focus on early life, the first thousand days. as requiring action for US health to improve. I was asked to join the board of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility to lead their strategic plan to improve US health.

My work tries to explain the health status of various countries around the world, with trends since the transition from the paleolithic to the neolithic as well as the history of colonization.
