Primary Care Practices
The ITHS WWAMI region Practice and Research Network (WPRN) supports collaboration between primary care practices and academic researchers on research that improves the health and well-being of patients in their communities and enhances primary care clinical practice.
The WPRN is a primary care, practice-based research network across 34 organizations and over 90 clinics in
the five-state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). These clinics are found in both rural and urban settings. They include community health centers, private and academically-affiliated practices, and government-operated clinics.

What We Do
The WPRN offers clinicians and primary care practices an opportunity to take part in research that matters to their practices, patients, and communities. WPRN practices contribute to evidence-based knowledge in primary care by generating project ideas, conducting studies at their own sites, and collaborating with academic researchers on studies across the WPRN. Clinical research partners may have the opportunity to participate in all stages of research, including development of research questions, ensuring research methods fit with primary care practice, interpreting research results, and publishing and sharing findings with practices.
Being part of the WPRN allows community-based primary care practices and their patients the opportunity to participate in research studies that have traditionally occurred in academic medical settings. Members have found that research collaboration introduces innovation to their clinics and increases their capacity for quality improvement.

WPRN is currently open to new member practices. By joining WPRN, you can:
- Be part of research that will inform and support evidence-based knowledge in primary care
- Influence research to ensure relevance to practices and communities
- Increase capacity for and experience with research through guided training
- Increase the ability to use electronic health record data for quality improvement and research
- Be at the cutting edge of research and practice innovation
- Influence health care on a national level
Practice research champions have the opportunity to:
- Connect with academic investigators and colleagues from other WPRN sites through networking and professional development opportunities
- Attend an annual meeting to grow your skills in practice-based research and stay up-to-date with WPRN activities (CME credit provided)
- Serve as members of research teams and contribute to scholarly products
How to Join the WPRN
WPRN membership is open to primary care practices in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. Practices designate a clinical research champion to communicate with the WPRN Coordinating Center.
