ITHS Hosts First Ever Puget Sound NIH K-Awardee Event

20140227_161421_webThe Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS), in partnership with the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research and Fred Hutch, hosted a panel discussion and networking reception for National Institutes of Health K-Award recipients on February 27, 2014. The event, which was the first of its kind in the Puget Sound area, drew approximately 25 awardees.

“K-awardees represent the next generation of clinical and translational researchers, and we felt they might benefit from an opportunity to ask questions of others who have dealt with some of the same challenges they currently face,” said Dr. Cathryn Booth-LaForce, ITHS Senior Faculty Director and the Charles and Gerda Spence Professor of Nursing at the University of Washington.

Attendees heard first-hand from a panel consisting of Dr. Nathan White, UW Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and current ITHS KL2 Scholar; Dr. Nathan Sniadecki(pictured), UW Albert Kobayashi Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Dr. Larry Kessler, Chair of Health Services at the UW School of Public Health; and Dr. Harlan Robins, Assistant Member of Fred Hutch and Co-Founder of Adaptive Biotechnologies.

The discussion, which was moderated by Dr. Ian De Boer, ITHS KL2 Faculty Chair and UW Associate Professor of Nephrology, covered topics such as securing and managing research funding, collaborating with peers, getting started with teaching, surviving as research faculty after their K Awards end, and commercializing scientific discoveries.

“We were very pleased to see this level of interest from the local research community for a first-time event,” said Leslie Rae Schmitz, the ITHS Director of Education Programs. “What we heard is that there is a real need for junior faculty to expand their peer-to-peer and mentor-to-peer networks beyond their immediate research community. We look forward to collaborating with our partners to offer more networking opportunities like this in the future.”
