ITHS Abstracts Accepted by Translational Science Meeting

The Association for Clinical and Translational Science has accepted four abstracts from the Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) for poster presentation at the Translational Science 2014 Meeting, which will take place April 9 to 11, 2014, in Washington, DC. The accepted abstracts discuss the ITHS Hispanic Community Outreach Program, Data QUEST infrastructure, PRISM online training, and new online learning repository.

Nora Coronado, Hispanic Community Liaison, will present ITHS’ Hispanic Community Outreach Program. This program is working to increase participation by Hispanics in translational health research conducted by ITHS-affiliated investigators throughout the five-state WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) region. Ms. Coronado will share results from the first 12 months of community engagement efforts, which appear to be an effective strategy for increasing the participation of Hispanics in translational health research.

Hossein Estiri, Predoctoral Research Associate, will present an analysis of Data QUEST data quality. Data QUEST is an infrastructure used by the WWAMI region Practice and Research Network (WPRN) to facilitate secure sharing of electronic health record data for research. His poster presentation will highlight some possible data quality issues and why quality assessments must be integrated with data sharing infrastructures to ensure the best use of data for translational research.

Jessica Ridpath, Research Communications Consultant, will present PRISM Online Training as a means of facilitating clear communication between researchers and the public, which is essential to promoting translational science and ensuring that new therapies reach those who are in need. PRISM, which stands for Program for Readability In Science & Medicine, was developed by Group Health Research Institute in 2005 to provide researchers with training and tools to support clear communication, and has been shown to be effective in boosting plain language skills of research professionals.

Leslie Rae Schmitz, Director of Education, and Sensen Li, Curriculum Manager, will present the ITHS Online Learning Center as a means of harmonizing and integrating online educational content to ensure it is useful, impactful, and in alignment with the CTSA Translational Education Core Competencies. Their poster presentation will detail the development of ITHS’ new learner-centered educational environment, or E-Portal, the instructional design theory, and implementation, including lessons learned that can be adopted by others.
