26 Aug Celebrating Success: The ITHS Grant Writing Program Helps Dr. Sara Kinter Secure NIH Funding
Dr. Sara Kinter, PhD, MA, CCC-SLP, an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UW and a PI with the Center for Child Health, Behavior, and Development at SCRI, is no stranger to the challenges of writing grant proposals in hopes of securing research funding. Although Dr. Kinter’s K23 grant applications received high reviews, her first two scores fell slightly short of the funding threshold. She then enrolled in the ITHS Grant Writing Program in preparation for her next application.
Once she completed the grant writing course, Dr. Kinter resubmitted the K23 application in late 2024 and secured a successful impact score of 14! She received her Notice of Award (NoA) in June of 2025.
“Thank you so much for your support of this out-of-the-box early career researcher!” says Dr. Kinter.
The ITHS Grant Writing Program, co-sponsored by UW School of Medicine and the UW School of Public Health, is a 12-week course designed for junior faculty and post-docs by Drs. Annette Fitzpatrick and Larry Kessler. At the end of this program, participants are expected to have developed a completely written grant in the final stages to be submitted to a funding organization. The course will concentrate on both investigator-initiated and career-development grants. Click here to learn more about the program.
Says Dr. Kessler, “It is our honor to teach and work with these promising young faculty from our region and help them launch their research careers. We feel so pleased that the very hard work that Dr. Sara Kinter did during and after our class on grant writing came to fruition for her. We sincerely believe that the K23 award she has earned will launch an outstanding research career. Our class is a small part of this for her, and we know she felt all the effort was indeed worth it.”
