How promotion and appointments work is often a mystery. The goal of this session is to de-mystify the process. The seminar will begin with a short lecture on defining academic tracks and reviewing time in rank and publication date followed by a discussion of specific “cases.”

By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Understand structure of faculty tracks
- Understand the difference between “Acting Instructor” and “Clinical Instructor”
- Understand the difference between appointment and promotion and the difference between Assistant Professor and Clinical Assistant Professor
- Understand the criteria for Promotion to Associate and Full Professor in a given track
About the speaker
John Amory, MD, MPH obtained his MD from the University of California, San Francisco where he also completed his residency in internal medicine. He is currently a professor of medicine and section head of general internal medicine at the University of Washington, where he works as an attending physician in the inpatient medicine wards and in the General Internal Medicine Clinic. Dr. Amory’s research interests are the development of novel forms of male contraception and new approaches to the treatment of men with infertility. Dr. Amory has published 142 peer reviewed papers in the field of male reproduction and holds current funding from the NIH grant for male infertility research.
Dr. Amory is also the faculty co-director of the ITHS KL2 Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Career Development Program.
